After the completion of our first DIY Swimming Pond Kit we kept in touch with our wonderful customer, they have now kindly completed this questionnaire for us on how the pond has changed their lifestyle. We feel this is the perfect way to highlight how a Natural Swimming Pond can change the way you live and the environment you live in.
What inspired you to build a natural swimming pond instead of a traditional pool?
Our primary reason for wanting the swimming pond was to encourage wildlife and more bio diversity into the Garden.
How did you first hear about natural swimming ponds?
We had been lucky to swim in a friend’s pond. It was a magical experience.
What were your main goals or hopes when starting the project?
That we would encourage wildlife ,create a wider diversity of plants and fauna in the garden and have a body of water to sit by and swim in.
Can you tell us a bit about your pond and any key features you love?
We love the planting, but also cherish the reflection it gives, particularly at night. Night swimming by the full moon is a fantastic experience.
What was the most exciting part of the build process?
Watching the pond being dug. Robert uses his digger with expertise and finesse He brought what we imagined to life.
How has your outdoor lifestyle changed since installing your swimming pond?
We definitely gravitate outside more now we have the pond. We like to cook outside when the family visits and sit by the fire, even in the winter months.
How often do you use the pond for swimming or relaxation?
In the height of Summer we swim daily, it’s an invigorating way to cool off. During the winter months we let the pond rest, but do swim after a sauna which we light every couple of weeks or so.
Have you noticed any wildlife visiting or living around your pond?
The wildlife appeared before the pond was full. The great diving beetle arrived first, then Water boatmen, pond snails, pond skater, newts, dragon fly nymph and frogs etc. Then there are the birds, both local and migratory come to drink and wash at the pond.
Do you find maintaining the pond easier or harder than you expected?
Because this is our first pond, we have had no experience so had little expectation. Robert has been a great educator for us, with regards to the pond’s up keep and maintenance. It is a living organic body that needs certain aspects to be in balance. Like any living thing, the more care and attention you give it, the more it will flourish. Tending the pond is like weeding a garden, i just need to dedicate time to do it.
What do you enjoy most about swimming in natural, chemical-free water?
It feels like a treat. The water is a living water, and we have the opportunity to swim alongside the wildlife that inhabit it. This feels like something that is as old as time. We can restore, replenish and revive ourselves in this natural body of water.
How does spending time around the pond make you feel — physically or mentally?
The pond has a calming presence, so I often head there when I am feeling reflective. It offers a place for tranquillity which is much needed in the busyness of the day.
Have family and friends enjoyed the pond as much as you expected?
The pond has had a profoundly positive effect on our gatherings. It has become a central point of where we meet and spend time together. Some swim, some paddle, some sit and put their feet in. It brings joy and activity to all who use it.I am also a bee keeper, and the bees are enjoying the shallow edges to take water back to the hives. This has become one of my favourite things to observe.
Looking back, what difference has the pond made to your home and lifestyle?
It has improved it beyond measure. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
Would you recommend a natural swimming pond to others considering one?
I would, but with the caveat that you get a professional passionate like Robert to come and do it for you. You may need guidance with a planning proposal, drawings done etc. this can be hard without professional advice.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone thinking of building a swimming pond, what would it be?
Do your research. Ask questions and visit other ponds if you can.
Do you have a favorite spot or time of day to enjoy your pond that we could highlight?
A midnight swim under a full moon.
